Preparing to Read

Preparing to Read

When you are given a reading assignment, use the following strategies in preparing to read.

  • Locate the text within its broader context by reading biographical notes about the author and seeing what you can infer from the title.
  • Notice the length of the essay--but remember that long essays are not always difficult and short ones are not always easy.
  • Note whether there are section breaks, subheadings, and footnotes.
  • Answer any preliminary questions that come to mind.
  • Remember that you, too, have something to contribute--you bring your own knowledge, opinions, experiences, and attitudes to the text.
