Try It Yourself: Quoting

Use direct quotations under certain circumstances:

  • when they capture the essence of an idea accurately and briefly
  • when the sentence or group of sentences is worded particularly elegantly
  • when the words demonstrate the effectiveness of the original essay or the authoritative voice of the author
  • when the vocabulary simply cannot be changed without injuring the meaning of the original
