Machu Picchu rediscovered in 1911 by Yale archaeologist Hiram Bingham. This ancient Incan city high in the mountains of Peru is one of the amazing archeology sites in the world. The Incas people began using this Andean mountain top in the early 1400; however, legends indicate that Machu Picchu was the sacred place centuries before that. The Incas turned the site into a small but extraordinary city where they may have used as a secret ceremonial site. Machu Picchu was invisible from below and complete self-contained. It surrounds by agricultural terraces that grew enough food to feed the entire population. The ruin of the city includes well-preserved palaces, baths, temples, storage rooms, and about 150 houses. These granite structures are incredible architectural achievement. They are made from huge building blocks that weighing more than 50 tons. The stonemasons worked without mortar, were able to put them together so well that, even hundred of years later, there is no space between them. Archeologists are not sure about the use of the site. However, they had found the skeletons of many more females than males leads some of them to believe that it may have been a shelter for priestesses or brides of the Inca nobility.
