Case Problems

Storage On Tap

Lorne and Judy continue to create efficient documents using the lessons they have learned in chapter 10. In the following case problems, assume the role of Lorne and Judy and perform the same steps as they would perform to complete these tasks. You may want to reread the chapter opening before proceeding.

  1. Just has created a flyer about the security features available at Storage On Tap. She had previously created the flyer without any formatting and now wished to go back and "spice it up". She opens the "wd10xtra04.doc" Word file and saves it as "Security Flyer" to her personal storage location. She starts by applying the Heading 1 style to the text "Security" and applying the Heading 2 style to the following items:
    • Coded Entry
    • Individually Alarmed Units
    • Video Surveillance

She then creates a new style using a decorative font and bold formatting. She calls this style "logo" and applies it to all three instances of the company name. Her completed document looks similar to figure 10.4.

Judy saves and closes the document.

    1. Judy wants to collect the various flyers and promotional materials she has created into one concise booklet. She decides that the best way to do this would be to create a master document. She starts by creating a new Word document and then adds the following files as subdocuments:
      • Wd10xtra05a.doc
      • Wd10xtra05b.doc
      • Wd10xtra05c.doc

(Note: you may get warned that the "logo" style exists in each document. There is no need to rename it ? the styles are identical.)

She saves the master document to her personal storage location using the name "Info Handout" and keeps it open for the next exercise.

      1. Lorne has created an Excel spreadsheet that lists the various sizes of storage units that are available for rental. Accordingly, she formats the text "Unit sizes range from 5'x5' to 10'x30'" on page one to hyperlink to the Excel file "wd10xtra06.xls". Her document appears similar to that shown in figure 10.5.

She saves the document as "Info Handout with hyperlink" to her personal storage location and closes Word.
