Working With Tables And Columns

Case Problems

Zeigler Computing

Jorge is gaining a reputation for his Word proficiency. Al now comes to Jorge for many of his word processing tasks. Assume the role of Jorge as he creates and modifies several documents and perform the steps that he identifies.

  1. Jorge needs to create a contact list of part-time instructors used by the Dallas office. This contact list will be used for scheduling and to contact instructors in case of an emergency. Jorge creates the table by referring to Figure 5.6. After including all the information in the table, Jorge applies the "Table Contemporary" AutoFormat style to the table. The table should now appear similar to Figure 5.6.

He then saves the document as "Dallas Instructors" to his personal storage location and prints a copy. Jorge keeps the document open for use in the next exercise.

  3. Jorge decides to sort the list by last name and then by what courses the instructors are certified to teach. He selects any cell in the table and uses the Table, Sort menu command to sort by Name . He decides to list each instructor’s courses in alphabetical order. He accomplishes this by selecting all of the text in the first entry under "Certified to teach" and using the Table, Sort menu command to sort by paragraph. By repeating this process for each of the five entries, he is able to completely sort the table as shown in figure 5.7. Jorge then saves the document as "Sorted Dallas Instructors" and closes the document.

  5. Jorge’s boss, Al, asks Jorge to create a similar document for the Seattle location. However, Al would like the document to be formatted like the one shown in Figure 5.8. With little time, Al feels confident that he can include all the professional features, such as merging cells, shading, and changing font color. He saves the completed document as "Seattle Instructors."
