Vernier Luxury Suites: Linking Data Between Word and Excel

Barb, the accounting manager at the Vernier Luxury Suites hotel, would like to incorporate data from Excel in to her monthly report. In this exercise, you assume the role of Barb as she creates her report.

  1. Open the wd08xtra01.xls Excel file and save it as "January Data" to your personal storage location. Briefly review its contents.
  2. Create a new blank Word document as save it your personal storage location as "January Report."
  3. In Excel, select the line chart and copy it to the Clipboard.
  4. Return to Word and paste the chart with a link to the original worksheet
  5. CHOOSE: Edit, Paste Special

    SELECT: Paste Link radio button

    CLICK: OK button

    Your document should now appear similar to figure 8.1.

  6. Save and close the "January Report" document.
  7. In Excel, change the number of rack rate rooms sold in the first week of January.
  8. SELECT: Cell B4

    TYPE: 0

  9. Save the "January Data" workbook.
  10. Return to Word and open the "January Report" document. Notice that the graph has changed to reflect the change made to the Excel workbook.
  11. Save and close the "January Report" document.
  12. Close the "January Data" workbook.

Temporary Solutions: Comparing and Merging Documents

Erica has composed a cover letter for the information packet to be given out at Temporary Solutions’ IT Job Fair. She has sent it on to her co-worker Meghan to check it and make suggestions. Meghan forgot to turn on tracked changes before she made her revisions. Erica decides to merge the copy that Meghan changed with her original in order to make her revisions.

  1. Open the WD08XTR02a document and save it as "Erica’s Original" to your personal storage location. Close the document.
  2. Open the WD08XTRA02b document and save it as "Meghan’s Revision" to your personal storage location.
  3. Compare the open document with the file named "Erica’s Original" in your personal storage location. Your screen should now appear similar to Figure 8.2.

  5. Accept each of the proposed changes except for Meghan’s deletion of "event" and addition of "Job Fair".
  6. Save the document as "Erica’s Final" to your personal storage location.
  7. Print and then close the "Erica’s Final" document.
  8. Close the "Erica’s Original" document.

Jan Dice: Updating File Properties

Jan is about to send out a document to be used by a colleague. Before she does so, she would like to be sure that the document has the correct file properties. Assume the role of Jan and perform the steps that she identifies.

  1. Open the wd08xtra03.doc Word file and save it to your personal storage location as "Coleman brief".
  2. Open the file properties.
  3. CHOOSE: File, Properties

  4. Change the title of the document to "US Vs. Coleman"
  5. CLICK: Summary tab

    CLICK: Title text box

    TYPE: US vs. Coleman

  6. Change the author of the document to William S. LaBahn
  7. CLICK: Author text box

    TYPE: William S. LaBahn

  8. Add Jan’s name as the person who checked the document.
  9. CLICK: Custom tab

    CHOOSE: Checked by in the list

    CLICK: Value text box

    TYPE: Jan Dice

    CLICK: Add button

  10. Close the properties dialog box and accept the changes.
  11. CLICK: OK button

  12. Save the document and close it.
