  1. Considered valid and academic analyses, which of the above analyses discuss the film's structure, the techniques used, and the function for the director's purposeful decisions (the steps outlined in the text for analyzing structure)? In learning about the structure of the film, which analysis is the most helpful in helping you understand why Citizen Kane is written, filmed, directed, acted, and edited the way it is? Are any of the analyses more like a review? Which one is the most scholarly and provides the best information about style?

  2. Read the critical response section of the geocities.com article. What do you learn about critically analyzing films from reading this? What elements of criticism are present? How much of the discussion is plot related? Director related? Visually related? Character related? Historically related? Do you think the response is complete? If you were writing a response of the film, what would you include in your critical response?

Would you consider this a review of a film? An analysis of style? A scholarly article about a man's work in the film? How does this article use various styles to analyze the film's various styles and the work as a whole? What sort of outside references does the author use to support his ideas? How do these lend credibility to his analysis?

  2. What does the author say the intent of the film is? How does he arrive at this conclusion? Do you agree or disagree that this is the intent of the film? Based on his analysis of the film, would you be interested in viewing the film? Do you think his analysis will help you to better understand the film?
