I. Students should be able to identify and distinguish between the four subfields of anthropology. Students should understand what unites all of the subfields into the single field of anthropology, as well as what differentiates each subfield.
II. Students should understand what it means to say that something is a science and what characterizes scientific thinking.
III. Students should understand the difference between scientific and religious explanations of human origins.
IV. Students should be able to trace the development of evolutionary ideas, including the work of Linnaeus, Buffon, Lamarck, Cuvier, and Lyell.
V. Students should know how evolution by natural selection occurs.
