The order Primates, which appears to be closely related to the insectivores and bats, originated in the Cretaceous. Like the insectivores and bats, the early primates are thought to have developed many primate features as an adaptation to insect predation. There is a tendency for people to refer to fossil groups in terms of analogies with living groups. For example, the Miocene hominoids are frequently referred to as "apes." Although these forms may have ancestral to modern apes (and humans as well), they are not really apes in the modern sense. What is the danger of calling early hominoids, such as Aegyptopithecus and Proconsul a monkey or an ape?
