I. Students should understand the ABO blood system, including the relationship between the various genotypes and phenotypes, and why blood type matters for blood transfusions.

II. Students should be able to distinguish between the various causes of genetically based abnormalities.

III. Students should know how the inheritance of X-linked traits differs from typical Mendelian inheritance.

IV. Students should know the causes and consequences of chromosomal abnormalities.

V. Students should gain an appreciation for the many recent advances in genetics knowledge and the ethical dilemmas that accompany them.
