Following the completion of this chapter, students will be able to:

  1. Define life expectancy and longevity, explaining commonalties and differences between them.
  2. Discuss the projected limits of the human life span as they are explained by biologically-based and lifestyle-based theories.
  3. Describe the relationship between quality of life and longevity.
  4. List and explain the characteristics of three genetic-programming and six variable-rate theories.
  5. Define biomarkers and describe their influence on longevity.
  6. Describe changes in physical appearance associated with aging and describe how the impact of these characteristics influences the aging person.
