Chapter Summary

Gluck intended to reform serious opera by imposing classical restraints upon it. Comic operas became very popular, for audiences appreciated their light mood, unpretentious staging, and use of vernacular languages. Haydn and Mozart wrote religious choral music as well as operas, but Protestant music declined, since Protestants required music to be a functional rather than an artistic part of the worship service.
