Chapter Summary

The turn of the nineteenth century was a transitional period when both Classical and Romantic characteristics were evident. Beethoven's earlier works are closely related to those of Haydn; those written after 1800 are more Romantic in conception. Schubert's instrumental music is Classical in design, though often Romantic in expression; but his Lieder are entirely the products of a Romantic imagination.
