Chapter Summary| The music of the Romantic period must be considered in direct relation to its creators, passionate individuals whose styles were related, yet unique. The Romantics' preference for expression over form led many composers to write program music. A close wedding of literature and music produced several new forms, including the concert overture, the tone poem or symphonic poem, and the program symphony. Nationalism and the strong desire for personal expression also encouraged the composition of program music.
Nevertheless, a few composers organized their Romanic concepts according to Classical designs.
