Music theater's integration of music, drama, and the visual arts made this a favorite form of Romantic expression. The visual splendor of French grand opera affected opera composers everywhere. In France, the opéra comique competed with grand opera for popularity. Italian Romantic opera was dominated by Verdi, while Wagner introduced the German music drama. Gilbert and Sullivan's comic operettas gained enormous popularity in England and abroad.
