Chapter Summary| A period of post-Romanticism, dominated by Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler, coincided with certain reactions against Romanticism, including Impressions and Primitivism. These latter movements centered in Paris, but the Austro-German romantic psyche culminated early in the twentieth century with the ultimate romantic style, known as Expressionism. Schoenberg finally abandoned tonality in music, which addressed the disturbances of pre-World War I society. |
