Chapter Summary

Folk and popular styles have always had great influence over art music, and have become even richer sources of inspiration in the twentieth century. Ragtime preceded and influenced jazz. Rock 'n' roll, combining characteristics of rhythm-and-blues and country-western music, evolved to the more sophisticated and highly varied music styles collectively called rock.

Broadway musicals, including revues as well as book shows, depend on the contributions of lyricists and choreographers as well as composers.
