 | Music: The Art of Listening, 6/e Jean Ferris,
Arizona State University-Tempe
Chapter Summary| Jazz, which developed from a combination of black and white music traditions, is often considered America's only truly indigenous music. The meter is usually regular, with considerable play against the beat; blue notes and improvisation are also characteristic of this music. Several regional styles are discussed and concert jazz, including bebop, cool, free jazz, and third stream, are introduced. Jazz today reflects all of the cultural and technological influences of the last quarter century. |
