Chapter Summary

Music must be heard to be fully appreciated. Recordings and tapes provide valuable listening experiences, but live performances encourage objective interpretation.

Understanding several types of performance enhances appreciation of early concert experiences. The student learns the difference between a band and an orchestra and is introduced to such basic forms of orchestral literature as the symphony and concerto. The typical concert (printed) program is also explained.

The chapter concludes with information on how to write about music.
