Prenatal Development

Essay Quiz

1

The principal of a local high school asks you to talk to the senior class about potential hazards to prenatal development. She asks that you honestly discuss alcohol and other drugs as well as environmental hazards and maternal diseases, including the different agents that can cause problems, the problems they may cause, and how these problems can be avoided. What will you tell the students about teratogens and prenatal care?
2

You consider your cousin to be an “exercise freak” and you think she is rather extreme in terms of watching her diet. To be precise, she exercises three hours a day, every day, doing various high-impact sports such as triathlon training, jogging, bungee jumping, as well as lower-impact activities like line dancing; and her diet consists primarily of vegetables and fruits, with some grains, but no meats and little dairy. You've discussed her eating habits with her before and she assures you that she has no food allergies, just believes this is the “normal” way for humans to eat. She now tells you she's pregnant and is concerned she may have to give up her activities and change her diet because she wants a healthy baby, although she really doesn’t want to change her lifestyle. What advice can you give her about maintaining her fitness while ensuring the well-being of her child?
