Chapter 5 defines the various sex hormones and discusses prenatal sexual differentiation as well as sexual differentiation during puberty. In this chapter the authors:
  • Discuss the sex hormone systems in the male and in the female.
  • Discuss prenatal sexual differentiation, beginning with the sex chromosomes of the fertilized egg and including the differentiation and descent of the testes and ovaries.
  • Discuss atypical prenatal gender differentiation.
  • Discuss sexual differentiation during puberty, which includes an increase in the production of sex hormones and body growth. Females experience breast development and the beginning of menstruation, while males experience growth of the penis and testes and the beginning of ejaculation.
