Colonialism and Development

Learning Objectives

This chapter introduces students to the history and effects of colonialism, especially on the part of the British and French. The chapter also discusses the continuing development and industrialization of third-world countries, and some of the problems caused by these changes.

I.

You need to know the difference between colonialism and imperialism.

II.

You should be able to identify the differences between French and British imperialism.

III.

You need to understand the effects that colonialism and imperialism have had on ethnic and cultural diversity.

IV.

You need to know what development is: who sponsors it, what its goals are, and its short comings. In particular, you should be familiar with the case studies of the introduction of sisal in Brazil and the greening of Java. You should know why these programs failed.

V.

You need to be familiar with the common problems of development programs. More importantly, you need to know what is the best way to go about designing and implementing economic development.
