Learning Objectives

This chapter discusses the results of contact between cultures of uneven influence. It focuses on how cultures can attempt to become dominant and how others might resist. It also examines the spread of American popular culture throughout the world as a case study.

I.

You need to know how westernization is a form of cultural domination. You should be aware of the effects that westernization is having on ethnic and cultural diversity around the world.

II.

You should understand how economic development and environmentalism can be vehicles for external regulation that threatens local communities.

III.

You need to know how religion has been used around the world and throughout history as a means of domination.

IV.

You need to understand how groups resist domination. In particular, you should be able to distinguish between the "public" and "hidden" transcripts that exist when one group attempts to dominate another.

V.

You should know what cultural imperialism entails and how mass media and popular culture have been used to both promote and resist cultural imperialism.

VI.

You need to know what postmodernity is and how it relates to the modern world system.
