Learning Objectives

This chapter introduces students to the anthropological definition and use of the concept of culture. It focuses on all of the aspects of culture and concludes with a discussion of culture change.

I.

You need to know the defining attributes of culture. In particular, you need to understand what it means that culture is learned, shared, symbolic, all-encompassing, and integrated.

II.

You need to know the different levels of culture and why it is important to distinguish between them.

III.

You must know the difference between ethnocentrism and cultural relativism and how both relate to human rights.

IV.

You need to know the differences between cultural universalities, generalities, and particularities. You should be able to provide examples of each.

V.

You need to know the mechanisms of cultural change.

VI.

You should understand what globalization is, the forces behind it, and its effects of local communities.
