Rhetorical Criticism and Theory in Practice Book Cover

Scrutinize Exercise

1

What other parts of culture can you remember that have fairly simple, but important, strategies of influencing an audience with a persuasive message? Try grocery store ads, telemarketing appeals, or political ads (or other similar possibilities that seem interesting to you). Aim for a type of message close to your long-term professional career goals. First read, listen to, or watch the messages you've picked. Take notes on characteristics or trends you notice in the messages. Also, write down anything you don't understand in terms, form, or function. Next, pose a series of questions similar to the ones we asked about classified car ads. What categories seem dominant? Are any specialized codes or message strategies used? What attributes of the product or service for sale seem most often mentioned? What factors (cost? purpose? audience?) might explain some of the tactics used? What implied word promises seem most important to the expected audience?
