About the Authors

Chris Spatz is a writer and Professor of Psychology, Emeritus at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. In addition to co-authoring Research Methods in Psychology: Ideas, Techniques, and Reports with Edward P. Kardas, Kardas and Spatz wrote the chapter, “Teaching Ethics in Research Methods Classes” for the edited book, Best Practices for Teaching Statistics and Research Methods. Spatz is the author of Basic Statistics: Tales of Distributions (9th edition). He was a section editor for the Encyclopedia of Statistics in Behavioral Science (2005) and has a chapter in The Handbook of 21st Century Psychology. For more than 20 years, he has reviewed manuscripts for the journal, Teaching of Psychology.

Spatz’s bachelor’s degree is from Hendrix College; his Ph.D. is from Tulane University in experimental psychology. He was awarded postdoctoral fellowships in animal behavior at the University of Michigan and University of California, Berkeley. In addition to teaching at Hendrix, he was a faculty member at The University of the South and the University of Arkansas at Monticello. He has taught the introductory research methods course more than thirty times and considers it the most challenging course in the psychology curriculum. Many of his techniques are described in the Instructors Manual.

Chris is married to Thea Siria Spatz and they have three children and seven grandchildren. Aside from writing, Spatz enjoys the outdoors, especially walking, camping, and canoeing. He swims several times a week and is active in the United Methodist Church.
