Distinguishing Features
Competencies for State Reading Tests: New Worlds addresses the four essential competencies required by most state reading tests (such those mandated by Texas and Florida): Vocabulary Skills, Basic Comprehension Skills, Critical Reading Skills, and Study Skills.
Systematic Approach: Part I (Chapters 1-2) focuses on getting a successful start in college and developing a college-level vocabulary. Part II (Chapters 3-7) presents basic comprehension skills, which students then are asked to practice and use throughout the text. Part III (Chapters 8-9) focuses on thinking and reading critically. (These two parts comprise the important comprehension core of the text.) Part IV (Chapters 10-11) introduces basic study skills.
Reading in Content Areas: All of the excerpts in New Worlds come from (or are adapted from) widely used, current college textbooks or other materials of the sort beginning college students are likely to encounter. This helps underprepared students to understand the real demands of actual college reading, as well as to develop the skills to handle that reading.
