New Voices: The compact edition showcases two writers in each genre whose voices have not been heard before in an introductory literature anthology:
Fiction: Maile Meloy and Timothy A. Westmoreland
Poetry: Kay Ryan and Simon Armitage
Drama: Mary Gallagher and Warren Leight
Literature in the News: Contemporary newspaper, magazine, and journal accounts of literary events and controversies are now included, demonstrating that literature is alive and well in the modern world.
Eight "Authors in Context" sections: These sections—on Poe and O'Connor in fiction; Dickinson, Frost, and Hughes in poetry; and Sophocles, Shakespeare, and Ibsen in drama—offer multiple pieces by a single author, a discussion of the time and place in which the author lived, and a critical assessment of the author's work. An additional selection of works presents pieces written in homage to or in some way inspired by these authors.
Author Portraits: Fiction authors, playwrights, and all poets represented by two or more poems, are now introduced with a brief biographical sketch and a photograph or portrait.
Transformed and Expanded "Transformations" Chapter: Robert DiYanni pioneered the discussion of art that inspires literature; in this edition, he expands that discussion. Chapter 10, "Transformations," features poems and paintings that have inspired each other; works of satire, along with the writing that they satirize; and early drafts of well-known poems that reveal the creative process.
6 of the 16 Plays Are New: In addition to two plays by Shakespeare—The Tragedy of Othello and Hamlet, Prince of Denmark—the drama section now includes Chekhov's A Marriage Proposal; Eugene Ionesco's The Gap; Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest; Elizabeth Wong's Letters to a Student Revolutionary; Mary Gallagher's Brother; and Warren Leight's The Final Interrogation of Ceausescu's Dog.
Poetry of the World: The new edition offers students an introduction to the poetic traditions of other cultures through this collection of poems in translation by writers from 20 countries.
