The Purposes of Public Schooling

This chapter looks at issues pertaining to the conflicting interests, goals, and purposes of public schools; discusses the political, social, and economic purposes of education; and presents conflicts and debates that arise over whose values and morals should be represented in schools.


Following the completion of this chapter:
  • The learner will be able to identify and discuss the political, social, and economic purposes of schooling.
  • The learner will be able to identify and discuss the historical goals and purposes of schooling.
  • The learner will be able to identify and discuss how differing political beliefs have impacted the political purposes of schooling.
  • The learner will be able to identify and discuss how moral values and beliefs have impacted the social purposes of schooling.
  • The learner will be able to identify and discuss how business, the global marketplace, and economic philosophies shape the economic purposes of schooling.
  • The learner will be able to discuss and critique the school as sorting machine and human capital.
