The Profession of Teaching

In this chapter, the shifting roles of teachers are presented. In addition to discussing the feminization of the profession and the bureaucratization of education, the movement to standardize the profession is discussed. Reasons for teacher satisfaction and dissatisfaction are also explored. A historical overview of the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers and the roles they have played in the work lives of teachers is presented. Through the case study of Tom Mooney, the responsibilities of a union leader are explored. This chapter also discusses the current political issues faced by teachers and the stances that teacher unions have taken with regard to them.

Following the completion of this chapter:
  • The learner will be able to identify and trace the shifting images and roles of teachers.
  • The learner will be able to identify and discuss the feminization of teaching.
  • The learner will be able to discuss the role standards and testing play in schooling, teacher education, and teacher development.
  • The learner will be able to identify and discuss the components of teacher education programs and the organizations that influence teacher education.
  • The learner will be able to identify and discuss the reasons the teachers are satisfied with teaching, as well as the factors that lead to teacher dissatisfaction.
  • The learner will be able to discuss the origins of the teacher labor movement.
  • The learner will be able to trace the history of the National Education Association and identify the issues and stances it takes on current issues impacting the work lives of teachers.
  • The learner will be able to trace the history of the American Federation of Teachers and identify the issues and stances it takes on current issues impacting the work lives of teachers.
  • The learner will be able to discuss the politics of teaching and how political issues impact the working conditions of teachers.
