The case study in Chapter Ten chronicled the excitement and the risk involved in staging a classic play in an innovative way. Have you seen a well-known play that's been staged in an unusual way? Discuss why the staging did or did not illuminate the play's themes. If you haven't had the chance to see a live production revamped with unexpected staging, rent the 2000 film version of Hamlet, directed by Michael Almereyda and starring Ethan Hawke as the Dane. This version is set in modern times and uses a corporation as its setting rather than a kingdom. Is the setting successful?

So much of putting a production together is dependant upon money; you need money to get a show off the ground and you need to make money to keep a show running. As you can see from the case study in Chapter Ten, this puts a great deal of pressure on everyone involved with the project. How do you think this affects the creative process? Do you think that pressure is a positive or negative influence on the creative team, or is it not a factor?
