Watch two different versions of Hamlet on film. Compare and contrast the performances of the actors playing the title role. Describe each actor's interpretation of the role, and discuss how each interpretation is or is not justified by the text.

Some actors are called chameleons because they have the ability to total reinvent themselves for each role. Use terms and concepts that you have learned in this chapter to talk about a particular actor's performance that you admire. What choices did the actor make that captivated you? How did the actor use her voice and body to portray the character? What choices were specified by the text, and how did the actor embody them? How do you imagine external elements, like costumes, influenced the actor?

In order to inhabit a role an actor must investigate and imagine what motivates the character's actions. You may get a glimpse into this process if you try to imagine what has motivated great people in history. In this essay name one famous and one infamous historic figure (for example: Florence Nightingale, Hitler, Picasso, Gandhi, or Coco Chanel) and define and discuss what you think motivated each individual. When discussing a character that history records as villainous or evil, try to express their objective from the character's point of view using positive terms rather than negative ones.
