About the Author

Melvin Mencher worked for the United Press, for newspapers in New Mexico and California and covered Central America for The Christian Science Monitor. He has written extensively for various publications and was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard. He taught at the University of Kansas, Humboldt State University and at the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University.
