After reading this chapter, students should be able to:
  • identify the major strains of neo-Marxian theory;
  • elaborate on the various points of emphasis within each variant of neo-Marxian theory;
  • identify the contributions of each of the variants to the Marxist oeuvre;
  • explain the ways in which various neo-Marxist theorists have criticized Marx and the subsequent Marxist literature;
  • identify the important Hegelian Marxists and discuss their use of Marx;
  • discuss the foundations of critical theory and elaborate on its various critiques;
  • discuss Immanuel Wallerstein's historical Marxism;
  • identify and discuss the major scholars associated with the spatial turn in neo-Marxian theory, and the bases of this turn;
  • identify and discuss the premises of post-Marxist theory, including its aims and influences; and
  • describe the arguments about the continuing vitality of Marxian thought, as well as about its "death."
