The Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) maintains a website for students at http://web.imanet.org/academia/. Visit the site and do the following:

1. Locate the list of the types of positions that most organizations have for management accounting trainees. (Access the list as follows: Click on the Administration Building, then on the “Careers” link that appears within the “Career Counseling” section, and finally on the “How Do I Start My Career?” link.) Identify those positions that relate to managerial rather than financial accounting.
2. Locate the article, IMA, Students, and Professors: Partners in Progress, by Gary A. Luoma, and Keith A. Russell. (Access the article as follows: Click on the Library Building that appears on the IMA student site. Get the list of issues by clicking on the “imastudents.org magazine” link in the left hand column of the Library site. After clicking on the Issue 2 link, choose this article.) Summarize the programs that the IMA sponsors for students.
3. Locate the information about the scholarships that are sponsored by the IMA. (Access the information as follows: Click on the Administration Building and then on the “IMA Scholarships” link that is listed under the “Financial Aid Office” heading that appears in the left hand column of the page.) Briefly describe the two types of scholarships that are sponsored.

As you know, financial accounting differs in many ways from managerial accounting.

• The Institute of Management Accountants (http://www.imanet.org) provides an overview of the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation. (Access the overview at http://www.imanet.org/ima/sec.asp?TRACKID=&CID=5&DID=5.)
• The American Institute of Public Accountants (http://www.aicpa.org) provides an overview of the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation. (Access the overview at http://www.aicpa.org/nolimits/become/index.htm.)

Review the information provided on these two sites. Then, write a brief paper (3 - 5 paragraphs) that compares and contrasts these two professional designations.
