Puerto Rico is an Estado Libre Asociado of the United States. This means that the people of Puerto Rico are United States citizens. However, Puerto Rico is not an official state like California or Texas. While Puerto Rico is an important part of the U.S. economy and politics, it also retains some autonomy. This video segment focuses on a debe over the official language(s) of Puerto Rico, which are currently Spanish and English. While listening to the various perspectives of the debate, keep in mind the following:

• Puerto Rico's cultural traditions
• Puerto Rico's current ties to the United States
• the idea of language as a source of national or cultural identity
