Activity 1
Go to this on-line library of short stories and read one. Does the author misuse any expressions intentionally, in dialogue, for instance? If so, why do you think he or she decided to do this? Reflect on the ways in which ficiton writing is different from essay writing.
Activity 2
Go to a web site of a newspaper or magazine. Here are some suggestions:
Washington Post
New York Times
USA Today
Time
Newsweek
Read over several stories. Did you spot any misused expressions? If so, which ones? Why are such expressions hard to avoid, even for professional writers?
