The following summarizes what a student should have learned from reading each chapter of A History of Western Art.

It is assumed that students can identify all works by title, artist (if known), culture (or nationality) and time period, medium, and style. It is also assumed that students will look up and be able to define the bolded glossary terms. In addition, further examples of what a student should be familiar with are listed below.

After reading chapter 10, you should be able to:

  1. discuss the Christian assimilation of Roman beliefs and forms.
  2. draw and label the plan of Old Saint Peter's.
  3. trace the founding of Christianity.
  4. describe the basic Christian rituals.
  5. identify the Holy Family, the four Evangelists, and the major divisions of the Bible.
  6. describe the main events in the life of Christ.
  7. explicate the differences between the longitudinal Latin cross plan and the centralized Greek cross plan.
  8. trace the development of the Early Christian basilica from the Roman basilica.
  9. describe the iconography of the apse mosaics at San Vitale.
  10. describe the plan and interior of Hagia Sophia.
  11. describe the development and character of the codex.
  12. discuss the Iconoclastic Controversy.
  13. identify the boundaries of the Byzantine Empire on a map.
