The following summarizes what a student should have learned from reading each chapter of A History of Western Art.

It is assumed that students can identify all works by title, artist (if known), culture (or nationality) and time period, medium, and style. It is also assumed that students will look up and be able to define the bolded glossary terms. In addition, further examples of what a student should be familiar with are listed below.

After reading chapter 11, you should be able to:

  5. describe the technique of cloisonné.
  6. describe the process of illuminating manuscripts and their purposes.
  7. discuss the Classical revival of Charlemagne.
  8. describe the development of style in manuscript painting after the death of Charlemagne.
  9. describe Saint John the Divine's vision on Patmos.
  10. outline the Benedictine Rule and its architectural consequences.
  11. discuss the influence of Bernward on Ottonian art.
  12. compare Anglo-Saxon metalwork with the Scythian Animal Style and ancient Near Eastern art.
