The following summarizes what a student should have learned from reading each chapter of A History of Western Art.

It is assumed that students can identify all works by title, artist (if known), culture (or nationality) and time period, medium, and style. It is also assumed that students will look up and be able to define the bolded glossary terms. In addition, further examples of what a student should be familiar with are listed below.

After reading chapter 12, you should be able to:

  1. draw and label a Romanesque portal.
  2. draw and label the plan of Sainte-Foy, Conques.
  3. identify the general area of the pilgrimage roads.
  4. discuss the architectural developments that were inspired by the influx of pilgrims in western Europe.
  5. describe the Stavelot triptych and discuss the role of the reliquary.
  6. describe the iconography and function of the Last Judgment on the tympanum of Sainte-Foy.
  7. compare the tympanum of Sainte-Foy with the tympanum of Saint-Lazare at Autun.
  8. compare Romanesque manuscript painting with Romanesque church sculpture.
  9. describe the technique and subject matter of the Bayeux Tapestry.
  10. compare the apse fresco of Castel Appiano with the apse mosaic of San Vitale.
