The following summarizes what a student should have learned from reading each chapter of A History of Western Art.

It is assumed that students can identify all works by title, artist (if known), culture (or nationality) and time period, medium, and style. It is also assumed that students will look up and be able to define the bolded glossary terms. In addition, further examples of what a student should be familiar with are listed below.

After reading chapter 14, you should be able to:

  1. locate the following on a map of Italy: Tuscany, Florence, Padua, Venice, Rome, Naples, and Pisa.
  2. describe and compare fresco with tempera.
  3. describe the structure and purpose of the altarpiece.
  4. compare late Byzantine style with the style of Giotto.
  5. briefly describe Dante's Divine Comedy.
  6. compare Nicola Pisano's Nativity with Giotto's.
  7. describe the program and layout of the Arena Chapel frescoes.
  8. describe the apprenticeship system in the Middle Ages and early Renaissance.
  9. explain the revolutionary character of Giotto's style.
  10. discuss the emergence of new attitudes toward government in 14th-century Italy and their reflection in the arts.
  11. compare the styles of Giotto and Duccio.
  12. discuss the impact of the Black Death on the arts.
  13. characterize the International Gothic Style.
  14. compare the mood of court painting in the North with painting in Italy.
