The following summarizes what a student should have learned from reading each chapter of A History of Western Art.

It is assumed that students can identify all works by title, artist (if known), culture (or nationality) and time period, medium, and style. It is also assumed that students will look up and be able to define the bolded glossary terms. In addition, further examples of what a student should be familiar with are listed below.

After reading chapter 17, you should be able to:

  1. distinguish Mannerism from Renaissance style.
  2. explain the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation.
  3. discuss the juxtaposition of spiritual/mystical trends in Mannerism with overt eroticism.
  4. discuss Vasari's view of women artists.
  5. draw and label the plan of San Giorgio Maggiore.
  6. explain the innovative solution for the façade of San Giorgio Maggiore.
  7. compare Mannerist sculpture with Renaissance sculpture.
  8. discuss the implication and consequences of Veronese's trial before the Inquitition.
  9. explain what is Classical and not-Classical in Palladio's architecture.
