The following summarizes what a student should have learned from reading each chapter of A History of Western Art.

It is assumed that students can identify all works by title, artist (if known), culture (or nationality) and time period, medium, and style. It is also assumed that students will look up and be able to define the bolded glossary terms. In addition, further examples of what a student should be familiar with are listed below.

After reading chapter 22, you should be able to:

  1. discuss the Romantic movement in art, music, and literature in Europe and America.
  2. describe the architectural revivals associated with Romanticism.
  3. discuss the role the Salon in 19th-century France.
  4. compare watercolor with aquatint and oil paint.
  5. describe the themes prevalent in Romanticism and show how works of art illustrate them.
  6. describe the psychological insights evident in Goya's paintings.
  7. discuss the aesthetic of the sublime and its expression in painting.
  8. compare and contrast Romantic painting in England, France, Spain, Germany, England, and America.
  9. describe the difference between folk art and academic art.
  10. compare Rude's La Marseillaise with Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People.
