The following summarizes what a student should have learned from reading each chapter of A History of Western Art.

It is assumed that students can identify all works by title, artist (if known), culture (or nationality) and time period, medium, and style. It is also assumed that students will look up and be able to define the bolded glossary terms. In addition, further examples of what a student should be familiar with are listed below.

After reading chapter 24, you should be able to:

  1. compare Impressionism with Realism.
  2. discuss the motives for, and advantages of, Haussmann's urban renewal of Paris.
  3. describe the change in Manet's style from the 1860's to the 1880's.
  4. analyze the subject matter of Impressionism.
  5. discuss Degas' approach to formal immobility and mobility.
  6. explain the influence of photography on Impressionism.
  7. explain the technique of Japanese woodblock printing and the influence of the prints on the Impressionists.
  8. indicate the Impressionist aspects of Rodin's sculpture.
  9. compare French Impressionism and Realism with the work of Homer and Sargent.
  10. decide how you would have responded to Whistler's lawsuit if you had been a member of the jury.
  11. describe formalism and the aesthetic of "art for art's sake" in relation to Impressionism.
  12. discuss aspects of contemporary urban life as depicted in Impressionist paintings.
