The following summarizes what a student should have learned from reading each chapter of A History of Western Art.

It is assumed that students can identify all works by title, artist (if known), culture (or nationality) and time period, medium, and style. It is also assumed that students will look up and be able to define the bolded glossary terms. In addition, further examples of what a student should be familiar with are listed below.

After reading chapter 27, you should be able to:

  1. describe the development of Picasso.
  2. describe the influence of African sculpture on the work of Picasso.
  3. compare Analytic Cubism with Impressionism.
  4. describe the techniques of collage and assemblage, citing examples from the chapter.
  5. discuss the effects of the urban landscape and mechanization on the arts of the early 20th century.
  6. analyze the art-historical sources of Picasso's Guernica.
  7. discuss the significance and reception of the Armory Show.
  8. describe the various styles derived from Cubism.
  9. explain the social and artistic nature of the Harlem Renaissance.
  10. discuss the impact of 1917 on Malevich.
  11. compare Prairie Style architecture with International Style architecture.
  12. describe the difference in Kandinsky's paintings during the period of the Blue Rider and the Bauhaus.
  13. explain the influence of the Bauhaus on American architecture.
  14. discuss the philosophy of "form follows function".
