The following summarizes what a student should have learned from reading each chapter of A History of Western Art.

It is assumed that students can identify all works by title, artist (if known), culture (or nationality) and time period, medium, and style. It is also assumed that students will look up and be able to define the bolded glossary terms. In addition, further examples of what a student should be familiar with are listed below.

After reading chapter 30, you should be able to:

  3. relate Hamilton's guide to Pop artists to the works illustrated in the chapter.
  4. discuss the sources of Pop Art imagery.
  5. compare Abstract Expressionism to Minimalism.
  6. explain the influence of photography on Pop Art.
  7. describe the influence of traditional imagery on Pop Art.
  8. compare Op Art with Color Field painting.
  9. discuss the new media used in Minimalism.
  10. describe the autobiographical iconography of Hesse and Beuys.
  11. discuss the representation of the human figure in Pop Art.
