The following summarizes what a student should have learned from reading each chapter of A History of Western Art.

It is assumed that students can identify all works by title, artist (if known), culture (or nationality) and time period, medium, and style. It is also assumed that students will look up and be able to define the bolded glossary terms. In addition, further examples of what a student should be familiar with are listed below.

After reading chapter 8, you should be able to:

  1. label a map of Italy showing Etruria, Volterra, Chiusi, Veii, Tarquinia, Cerveteri, and Rome.
  2. compare Etruscan sculpture style with that of Greece in corresponding time periods.
  3. compare the position of women in Etruscan society with that of women in ancient Greece.
  4. describe the Etruscan view of death as it is reflected in art.
  5. compare Etruscan tomb paintings with Egyptian paintings on walls and papyrus.
  6. compare the Etruscan temple with Greek temples of the Classical period.
  7. explain the iconography of the mirror from Volterra. List the Etruscan gods and their Greek counterparts.
