The following summarizes what a student should have learned from reading each chapter of A History of Western Art.

It is assumed that students can identify all works by title, artist (if known), culture (or nationality) and time period, medium, and style. It is also assumed that students will look up and be able to define the bolded glossary terms. In addition, further examples of what a student should be familiar with are listed below.

After reading chapter 9, you should be able to:

  1. compare the Roman Empire with the Athenian Empire.
  2. compare the rectangular Roman temple with its Greek and Etruscan antecedents.
  3. diagram and label the Roman arch, dome, and vault.
  4. discuss the Roman view of art as described by Virgil.
  5. list the major architectural types of ancient Rome, including their function, and construction.
  6. describe the development of domestic architecture.
  7. compare the Roman Colosseum to the theater at Epidauros. Consider construction, location, and purpose.
  8. discuss the layout and purpose of the Roman forum.
  9. write an essay on the theme of the arch in Roman architecture.
  10. compare the Pantheon with the Temple of Portunus.
  11. discuss commemorative architecture.
  12. compare the narrative system of Trajan's Column with that of the Ara Pacis.
  13. write an essay on the different representations of Roman emperors.
  14. describe the mural painting of Pompeii, noting the subject matter, the different styles, and techniques for creating illusions of depth.
  15. relate the legend of the founding of Rome.
  16. explain the differences between Roman and Etruscan sarcophagi.
  17. compare the position of women in Rome with that of Etruria and Athens.
  18. locate the boundaries of the Roman Empire on a map.
