International Security: The Alternative Road

Security is the enduring yet elusive quest. The traditional means of pursuing self-defense or providing security for one's country is to amass arms and armaments in order to deter agression. But since this means of self-defense hasn't produced a consistent peace, perhaps alternative ways need to be considered. Should we abandon our weapons altogether? Should we create international security forces? Perhaps we should adopt the standards of pacifism.
Participate in the surveys in this chapter to see how your views about war and pacifism compare with those of other students. Examine the role of NATO and the United Nations in peacekeeping around the world. Are those strategies working? Is the world a safer place because of armaments or is peace more vulnerable than ever?
