International Organization: The Alternative Structure

The growth in the number, functions, and authority of international organizations is one of the most important trends in international relations. Organizations can and should begin to regulate the behavior of states, as perhaps the best way to address world problems. It is just possible that ongoing organizations will serve as prototypes or building blocks for a future, higher form of political loyalty and activity.
The exercises in this chapter ask you to consider such organizations as the United Nations and the European Union and evaluate their influence in the world.

  • Examine and discuss the current and expanding roles of IGOs after searching the Internet for the most viable and valuable IGOs around the world.

  • Describe IGO structure by evaluating the experience of the United Nations and by deciding which functions apply to its various committees.

  • Explain the prospect of effective supranational organizations for international governance, by researching and then commenting on the European Union.

  • Review the history and current membership of the European Union by visiting a map.

  • Study the effect of other international organizations on the role of specific states as well as on global issues by visiting some interesting Web sites.
